Inevitably there was a certain amount of ambivalence, along with the deepest regret, attached to Brian O'Driscoll's early disappearance from the Lions tour of New Zealand in 2005. Now, everything is the same except for the ambivalence, which means that it might just be dawning even on rugby union that it has delivered itself a shocking black eye.
